'Tis the Season.....again

...for remodeling!! *groan*

M wants a new kitchen. I'm not crazy about our kitchen, but I can live with it for a while longer. Obviously, we don't have $30,000++ to gut the kitchen and do it right. Who does? Right? So we are looking at a budget of maybe $4,000. We've been talking about doing the remodeling sometime this summer. I know M has been itching to get rid of our ugly, uncleanable linoleum floors for some time, and she had mentioned maybe getting started on the floor as early as Spring Break. So it was no surprise when M and friends began ripping up the floor last weekend. We have hardwood floors throughout our old house and were really hoping to salvage the wood floors we were certain were under the linoleum.

Unfortunately, between the hundreds of screw holes in the floor, the glue stuck all over it, and the multiple holes that were cut out at some time in the past for pipes and duct work to the basement, and then patched with plywood and cement, there isn't really anything to save. We're planning to get an estimate on how much it would cost to have new hardwood floors installed to match the old ones. If it's too much, we'll be tiling the floor ourselves. So the pictures you see here are not the photos of the destruction, those will be coming soon. No, these pictures I retrieved from Google image search to give you an idea of the look we will be aiming for.

Right now we have dark wood cabinets, PINK countertops and backsplash, watermelon and cherry wallpaper and we had a hideous linoleum floor. I've told you what we plan to do with the floor. We're planning to keep the cabinets, sand them down and paint them white and add new hardware. We're planning to have new black stone countertops and backsplash installed. We want a timeless, classic look to go with our 1930s house. We'll see how close we get. Stay tuned for pictures and wish us luck!

Sounds like fun. Jeff and I are working on putting up a fence for the back yard this year.. We have found 6' high by 8'wide planks at Home Depot for 24.95 a piece and we need 23 of them plus 24 poles and 24 bags of 1 gallon cement to make sure the posts stay in place.. So we have work a head of us also.. A lady from the church we were attending is doing the front of our house and back for us. She knows what is a plant and what is a weed.. I was hoping to just put down a tarp like thing and put some rocks or that tree stuff down.. I am not into flowers. I dont havea green thumb as they say.. Yikes.. Sorry for such a long comment..

M & K good luck, that is a lofty goal, hopefully in the end, it will be well worth the effort.

LOL, LOL...I looked at that first picture and I thought---"Gee, their Kitchen looks really GOOD! Why would they want to remodel??"
Then, I read on....Well, what you are going for looks FABULOUS!
Tearing out that floor must have been a barrell of laughs...(NOT!) But, I hope you get to do all the things you want, my dear.

Fun, fun, fun, NOT! Did you manage to skip out on ripping up the floor?

We've spent about $450 on our kitchen remodel. That counts paint, flooring, new cabinet hardware, new range-hood, and fabric for curtains(that I haven't done yet). The only other thing we want to do is stain the cupboards a darker color. $50 should cover that.

We're fortunate that our countertops are still in good shape...and not PINK...Ughh!

I definitely want pictures of the whole process! I love witnessing someone else's misery. ;D

Hi Tweets, don't worry about not having a green thumb, neither do I. My idea of gardening is plant it and forget it. If it survives, it was meant to be.

Hi P, I don't know about it being a lofty goal, I just hope I don't end up getting snappy at M halfway through the process. I've been very tired and short-tempered lately and yet she's been putting up with me.

OL, when "we" meaning M and our friend Alyson began chiseling away at the edge of the floor, I thought it would take days and maybe we wouldn't be able to get it up. Then our friend Les came over and Bobby helped and next thing you know, floor was being ripped up and flying everywhere. Guys love destruction probably because they are so good at it. :-)

Hey Tshsmom, I've been missing you on-line. Have you gotten that taken care of yet? As for skipping out on the process, well, I did manage to avoid the heavy labor of tearing it up, but I was there to sweep up the remains and haul each load outside. I definitely didn't do as much work as everyone else. Don't worry though, I'm sure I'm make up for it with the sanding and painting.
