It happened again this year. In the wee hours of May 1st (May Day), the lollipops began popping their heads out of the ground.

They were none too particular where they emerged either. They surrounded the morning paper,

they popped up around the bases of various trees,

they surrounded the posts of mailboxes,

they even took root in the midst of someone's garden!

They started out slowly, and then as reproductive as dandelions, they began bursting forth in the hundreds! I asked around and discovered this phenomenon occurred at 6 houses this year between the hours of 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Upon further investigation, I discovered that each of these houses had children living in them, so I'm suspecting the May Day Fairies, who are likely responsible for all these lollies, are partial to small children.

This year the May Day Fairies received a rare treat. After such early morning activities, they return home to bed, this year however, they awoke early enough to see a number of the children scampering around the yard picking lollipops.

One very kind parent took the following photos to share with the Fairies to let them see the joy they brought to this particular little girl.

There was one unfortunate incident in the midst of all this joy, however, one little boy, unbeknownst to the May Day Fairies, lost a tooth the night before the lollies bloomed. He put his tooth under his pillow and received a dollar coin for his tooth from the Tooth Fairy. Unfortunately for his parents, when he followed his father out front to get the newspaper and discovered all the lollipops, he squealed to his dad, "Dad! Look! The Tooth Fairy came outside too!"

The parents quickly explained that it was the May Day Fairies who brought the lollipops and not the Tooth Fairy, because they feared having to plant lollipops in the yard every time their son lost a tooth. :-)
